7 of the Youngest Leaders in World History
Across eras and continents, young people have taken on the responsibility of leadership at ages when most of us are just beginning to learn how to navigate adulthood. Some of these young leaders inherited powerful kingdoms, while others rose through political systems. And while history is full of monarchs crowned in infancy, we’ve focused here on people who were old enough to participate in ruling from the beginning. After all, youth doesn’t necessarily mean inexperience — some of the historical figures on this list had already commanded armies or navigated court politics in their teens. Here are seven people who assumed leadership at remarkably young ages.
Alexander the Great: Age 20
Alexander III, more commonly known as Alexander the Great, had already enjoyed a formidable education by the time he became king of Macedonia in 336 BCE. He had studied philosophy, medicine, literature, and science with Aristotle, governed Macedonia while his father was away, and commanded part of the Macedonian army at 18.
When his father, Philip II, was assassinated, the army declared 20-year-old Alexander king. He inherited Philip’s exceptionally well-trained military forces, along with his plans to invade the Persian Empire. Alexander spent most of the next 13 years on a military campaign, creating an empire that eventually extended from Greece and Egypt to northwestern India. He wasn’t even 33 when he died of a mysterious illness.

Cleopatra: Age 18
When Cleopatra VII’s father died in 51 BCE, the 18-year-old became co-ruler of Egypt alongside her brother Ptolemy XIII, believed to be around 10 years old. Although Ptolemaic custom envisioned them governing together, Cleopatra quickly emerged as the dominant partner. She was unusually well prepared for the international politics surrounding Egypt, reportedly speaking multiple languages and becoming the only member of her dynasty known to have learned Egyptian. (By birth, Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek, not ethnically Egyptian.)
After a power struggle forced her to leave the country, Cleopatra returned and regained her throne with assistance from Julius Caesar. She ruled with a succession of co-regents for more than 20 years, becoming the last active monarch of the Ptolemaic dynasty, the Macedonian dynasty that took over after Alexander the Great died and ruled Egypt before it fell to Rome.
William Pitt the Younger: Age 24
William Pitt was only 21 when he entered Britain’s House of Commons, but he quickly impressed fellow politicians with his measured stances and confident speaking style. Just three years later, in December 1783, King George III asked him to form a government. At 24, Pitt became Britain’s youngest-ever prime minister — a distinction he still holds. Technically, prime minister was not yet a formally defined office; Pitt’s official title was first lord of the treasury, but he performed the role now associated with the premiership. Opponents initially expected his administration to collapse almost immediately. Instead, Pitt’s first period in office lasted more than 17 years, and he helped shape the modern conception of the prime minister’s job.
Queen Victoria: Age 18
Victoria turned 18 on May 24, 1837. Less than a month later, she was awakened early one morning and informed that King William IV, her uncle, had died — and she was now queen. Her recent birthday meant Britain did not need to appoint a regent to govern for her. The young queen had received a private education, but she still initially relied on Prime Minister Lord Melbourne — and later her husband, Prince Albert — to help her understand the workings of a constitutional monarchy. Victoria ultimately reigned for more than 63 years, lending her name to an era of immense industrial, political, and social change. She remained Britain’s longest-reigning monarch until Elizabeth II surpassed her in 2015.
Harun al-Rashid: Age 20
Harun al-Rashid’s precise birth year is uncertain, but he was probably around 20 when he became the fifth Abbasid caliph in 786 CE. The young ruler inherited an empire that stretched from the western Mediterranean nearly to India, with Baghdad as its glittering capital. Although there was plenty of internal trouble and scattered revolts, his reign saw expanding trade and industries producing paper, textiles, and metal goods, while enormous wealth flowed into Baghdad. Harun was also a generous patron of the arts. His luxurious court was later romanticized in The Thousand and One Nights, a tale in which the caliph appears as an adventurous ruler who sometimes roams his capital in disguise.
Queen Tamar: Age 18
King Giorgi III of Georgia had a succession problem: He had no sons, and Georgia had no tradition of allowing a woman to rule in her own right. Determined that his daughter Tamar would succeed him, he had her crowned as his co-ruler in 1178, when she was probably about 18. He even issued coins bearing both of their names. When Giorgi died six years later, Tamar became Georgia’s sole monarch, despite considerable opposition from powerful nobles. Georgian sources accorded her the title mepe, or “king.” Her reign became known as the golden age of medieval Georgia, marked by growing trade, territorial expansion, and an extraordinary flowering of art and literature.
Jean-Claude Duvalier: Age 19
In 1964, François “Papa Doc” Duvalier declared himself Haiti’s president for life and arranged for his only son, Jean-Claude, to follow him. When the elder Duvalier died in April 1971, the 19-year-old known as “Baby Doc” became president for life. According to Guinness World Records, he was precisely 19 years and 293 days old — the world’s youngest appointed president. He remained president for nearly 15 years before mounting protests brought his rule to an end in 1986.
