History is filled with spooky events, from strange episodes caused by human behavior to natural phenomena that remind us how little we understand the world around us. Some of the strangest incidents were mysteries in their own time but make more sense now, while others still leave us with unanswered questions — and an enduring fascination. Here are six spooky historical events, some of which remain unexplained to this day.

The Dancing Plague of 1518

In July 1518, a woman identified in historical accounts as Frau Troffea reportedly stepped into a street in Strasbourg and began dancing. Within days, dozens of people had joined her. Later accounts described hundreds of people caught up in the bizarre episode that continued for two months.

The city’s authorities had no idea what was happening. Physicians blamed “hot blood,” while religious explanations included possession or punishment by St. Vitus. In an especially strange response, officials arranged for musicians and professional dancers to keep the afflicted moving, apparently believing that more dancing would help cure them. It didn’t.

Modern historians have proposed several explanations, including disease, extreme stress, religious beliefs, and mass psychogenic illness arising amid famine. Ergot poisoning — caused by eating contaminated grains — has also been suggested, although it doesn’t adequately explain all aspects of the outbreak. There is still no single universally accepted explanation for what’s become known as the “dancing plague.”
